Challenge Five - Say Konichiwa to Fashion

Guest Judge - Durelle Brown

Comment from our Guest Judge:

I have always loved anything Asian as a matter of fact most of the décor in my home has Asian styling. I find the culture and art fascinating and intriguing. This challenge was the perfect one for me to guest judge. I have designed many doll costumes with an Asian twist.  I was thrilled to open the site this morning to view the newest challenge entries. It was a feast to my eyes. The creativity and fun that I see here means that most of you understood and enjoyed this challenge; so much so that I gave 2 perfect scores. Honestly this has to have been the easiest challenge thus far in this competition; all you really had to do was to re-imaging the classic Kimono! Most of you did just that… I just want to comment publicly that as a group you did a stellar job… imaginative and stylish. It is an honor to assist Larraine in judging her contest. Congratulations to you all, you are all winners just for participating!

I really like this fashion, I love that you mixed cultures with the African tribal prints and the traditional Japanese accessories. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a complete and total Japanophile. So this challenge was one of my favorites for this season. The doll looks great dressed, you continue to struggle with your finishing and that will always hurt your scores.  I love that you made so many of your accessories, they were very nice, but some of them were not as delicate as I would have liked.  I know the medium doesn’t allow the delicateness but that is where you start experimenting with other mediums.  Work on your finishing, you have great ideas and are well on your way to making fantastic things.

This is such a fun fashion!  The influence of Japanese traditional fashion and accessories is evident, but the unusual fabrics put a new spin on things.  Clearly the designer had a lot of fun with this one, as is evident in the meticulously crafted accessories.  The garment itself is pretty messy on the inside.  Seams could definitely be finished better.  If the designer had spent as much time on the finishing of the garment as on the accessories, this would be killer.

Thank you for kicking off the fun and excitement in this challenge. I was struck immediately with a flavor of Kimono, you took the challenge and did a great job of re-interpreting a fun well imagined Kimono. I did like the fabric choices and the accent colors used in the obi were striking.  The little cherry blossom (sakura) detail on the skirt and purse was colorful and perfect and added to the fun level.  It gave me a Harajuku feeling with classic kimono twist. I did score you high on the accessories however I took off ½ point, only because you were a bit OVER accessorized with the hair ornaments. The Oni mask, although fun was unnecessary and I liked the blue accent color in the hair it did not make since to me. The only negative I have to say about your work this round is that the construction is poor. Lots of frayed unsightly seems, to bad because this design was one of my top picks.

You made a very pretty gown, but the style and silhouette was very traditional and we needed you to go beyond the traditional.  I like what you made, your construction is nice, but your hand stitching is a bit messy on the lining finishing. Overall a nice job, but you didn’t go far enough away from the traditional and into the haute couture.

This is very pretty and quite traditional, apart from the use of the white floral fabric.  The styling accentuates the traditional aspects of the outfit.  The choice of colors is pretty.  I think overall the ensemble is a bit safe and even rather literal.  I think the designer might have pushed it more.

Not really a kimono but a dress with kimono sleeves, yet it is not unlike what others did; I like how it is lined and drapes the body, but there is some puckering on the left side. A patterned silk would have helped carry the theme since you chose not to use a kimono pattern.

You had me with the lime green silk. The color was stunning and I loved the white rose fabric very much which is very on trend in fashion now and surprisingly a good scale for the doll. You definitely met the theme of the challenge. The overall design is nice but was not remarkable and a bit on the safe side. I did like how cleverly you created the rose fabric half jacket. The view from the back took me by surprise with the “rose Tail”.  I believe it robbed the elegance from the fashion. The fit on the skirt seemed a bit odd and did not create a sleek look...But over all the construction is neat.  The accessories were sparse and did not work for me. The shoes were a misstep for the elegant design.

This is a cute fashion, but it is not couture.  The bell sleeves on the jacket don’t really say kimono, and the rest of the fashion is just a cute sundress.  You didn’t use any accessories so I can’t give points for what you didn’t use. I feel you strayed too far from kimono and into a more mod feel for your fashion, I don’t see any Japanese influence at all.

This is a good start, but again, I think this designer could have pushed more creatively.  I think it is a cute little outfit for a young model and it has just enough edginess to make it modern.  I must admit, however, I really don’t like the black stockings and traditional black shoes.  Opaque tights and some funky shoes, maybe even flats, would make this look much cooler and current.  Finishing is not very good on the inside of the coat and threads are evident on the sleeves from the outside.  That heavy brocade is hard to work with on this scale and has a tendency to look overworked.

I do not see the theme here………….even thou you used parts of my pattern. I think by omitting the notable Kimono sleeve you lost the spirit of the Kimono completely. This design did not show anything unique or original to me. I think that by using an Asian fabric you believed you followed the challenge. The construction was messy and the skit was way to short it was a good thing she had on stockings. However the stockings were very distracting with the HUGE seam that did not go evenly up the back of the leg. Styling is very important in the contest. All we have to judge from is you photo.  You were missing accessories completely.

This is a cute fashion, I am not sure it is couture, but it is cute. I clearly see the kimono influence.  I have a love hate relationship with the open sleeves.  I do like the choice of fabrics they combined well with the more modern choice of pieces. Your construction is good, but that skirt needs to be lined.

I do get the flavor of a kimono in your design, but I feel like she is about to take flight. The sleeves stand out straight from her shoulders and look like wings.  I find it very distracting.  I do love the pencil skirt paired with the kimono it looks very nice. One suggestion I would offer is maybe selecting different hem lines for the skirt and the Kimono. This would have made the design more interesting. I have mixed feeling for the print you have chosen. The red, black and white are great color choices but the pattern is too large and seems disjointed which destroys the overall appearance of the design. Each section of the Kimono has a different segment of the print creating a patch work effect. Your little hair ornament is wonderful and the cuff and shoes work well.

This is a cute simple fashion but is not couture. The sleeves of the coat do not really say kimono, and the little playsuit underneath is not quite up to the challenge of haute couture.  The ideas were good, but needed to be developed a bit further. Your construction looks ok, but your photographs are so blurry that it is hard to tell much.  What accessories you used were very basic.

The jumpsuit is a clever idea, but the print combined with the white kimono jacket reads a little bit like pajamas to me.  I wish the photos were a little sharper, as it is difficult to see the details of the finishing.  The coat needs to be really well pressed to make the seams lie flat so that it hangs properly. I don’t love the black pumps. Overall, I am a little underwhelmed.

I think you successfully achieved the Kimono styling with a fresh approach even thou I did not like the finished length of the sleeves. They seem stubby to me. I wish you had chosen fabrics that were more compatible, it seems to me the coat has a very “dressed up” feeling and the jumpsuit has a casual feeling.  I would have loved this entry if that jump suit had been a dressier fabric. I like the hemline choices you made here as well. Please work on your photography. These pictures are barely readable.  Your accessories were nonexistent except for that over scale fan which did nothing for your design. I think some snazzy shoes would have added more style to your outfit. By the time I got to the construction I could not see anything at all and I cannot judge what I cannot see.

I liked the look of this ensemble mainly because of the colors and hat; it does show somewhat of an eastern influence. However it does not really show use of, influence of, or inspiration from a kimono; the obi-esque belt is close as you get to a kimono. Pattern definitely not related to a kimono.

Great design but I am not seeing the theme here. The main challenge was to recreate the kimono but I do not see it. At first glance the design is stunning and the colors make a big impact but I have to judge based on the challenge. I like the quilted effect of the bodice, which has some Kimono styling but not enough for me to brand it Kimono. It is more of a vest. I would have never thought it was Kimono inspired until I saw it was paired it with the coolie hat.  The coolie worker hat seems a bit too small but adds to the Asian essence of the piece however, I don’t get the glove(???) or how it moves the design forward nor does the loin cloth element other than adding color and some pattern.

You made a lovely fashion, it is a bit traditional in silhouette, and removing part of the sleeve in the kimono is a very old trick to trying to update the look.  The neckline is a traditional way that many of the geisha wore their neckline to expose the upper shoulder to entice. I like the hair comb, very nice work. I think you could have pushed this look further into haute couture and have given it a more modern edge.

Very pretty color palette.  The Eastern influence is clear, but I almost detect a Medieval influence as well.  I love the hair ornament and I adore the dragon!  I am not sure if the hem is supposed to be longer in front than in the back, but it looks a little sloppy.  I can’t see the hem in the “inside out” shot.  And I will admit, I don’t love the pleated ribbon detail on the back of the dress.

This is a beautiful entry I love the color and you hit the mark at re-inventing the Kimono. I love the off the shoulder collar which creates a dramatic look. Your accessories were great the hair pin is unique and well made and the origami dragon is cute and clever. However, there are some things that bother me about this design. First is the loin cloth accent attached to the Obi? It seems to me to be more of an Egyptian detail and I am not sure how that fits in.  The other thing that I wonder about is your choice to do the back side of the sleeves in a contrast fabric. The hem line is different lengths from the front to the back which is detracting. The over all effect of this design is successful and is very marketable.

This entry is totally chic and funky and has an avante guard point of view. I like it very much. You took the Kimono and elevated it to high fashion which in essence it the whole point of this competition.  I applaud you, you really got it right. I thought it was clever how you integrated the obi into a sash for the Kimono wrap. The shawl over wrap I think it is the crowning jewel to this silhouette and really makes a statement. I like all of your fabric and color choices. The attached skirt has great design elements that compliment the kimono styling as well. Great job on the belt and fascinator as well. Over all great work and wonderful construction! Kudos….!

You made a cute wrap dress, but it doesn’t really have much kimono influence. The obi style belt is not enough to push this into an updated kimono. About the most this design has going for it is that it does “read” Kimono but not in a good way. I love the colors funky and fun, but I do not like the fabric. When you are working with a  stripe pattern  and applying it to a curved  design  and then  try to create a Poof effect on the curve   it adds up to a mess. Even thou I applaud you for taking a risk, the poof detail in the back creates a funny length and is poorly developed. It gives her sort of a bird like stance and an odd silhouette. I do not see any accessories other than leggings and gauntlets which I consider to be part of the outfit. The big plus on your design is that I think the art photo was one of the best.. Well done on that.

You made a very lovely fashion, and it is couture.  I see the Asian influence in the fashion as well, but it really doesn’t update the kimono.  I can clearly see the influence of the Dior 2007 collection which was one of my favorites. I’m just not sure how new, modern, or fresh any of these pieces are.  Everything feels traditional the suit feels like an updated 50’s or 60’s suit.  I love what you did, but feel we needed a bit more modern edge to the fashion for this challenge.

The structure balanced with the softness.  And that tattoo print fabric is piece of art!  I have been known to buy tattoo sleeves from the costume store to use as dress fabric and knowing that you made this printed fabric and seeing how it lines up on the seams is beautiful.  I love the details on everything.  You didn’t miss a trick and you played them all well.  Clearly the best in show for me this challenge in all three categories!  I can’t say enough nice things about this one!  Fantastic work!

The Asian influence in the ensemble is almost too subtle.  I can detect it in the coat, especially from the back, but I would not look at this fashion and say “ah ha! Clever and cute but I do not see kimono in this design. The white coat has a silly silhouette which to me does not have a kimono feeling and adds nothing to this design. Very pretty and defiantly meets the Kimono challenge. I am not sure it is a unique design but I really like your idea of a sheer lace bolero kimono. First impression I got from the design was a bit on the Spanish dancer side but the bolero kimono saved it. The skirt seem to me to be over worked, too many elements and layers and  I got confused with the hemline, seems to be a bit uneven. The obi sash worked well as a design element. Over all the design was nice and best of all I think it is a good commercial design that could sell well.

At first glance I thought your design was very sophisticated until I got to the little stringy elements hanging off the gauntlets. These could have been edited out completely.  They added nothing to move the theme challenge or the design forward and even gave the doll more of a showgirl look. You took a chance and I appreciate that but in the end those elements stole away the chic feeling that the design had. The styling on the hair and necklace were excellent and construction was very first-rate.

This is a cute fashion, but feels more like another style of traditional Asian costume mixed with traditional Mexican costume than a kimono.  I think the bulk of the sleeves with the bulk of the ruffles at the skirt are a bit too much. I can see a lot of work went into the sleeves and other parts of the fashion, but the finishing is not the best, and the dress is not lined. It still feels a bit traditional. There is a fit issue at the bodice. Very cute fashion, but it doesn’t fulfill the challenge.

Very dramatic.  I like the origami pleating on the sleeves, though it is a little heavy for tiny Momoko.  I like the upper part of the garment more than the lower.  A simple skirt would perhaps be more appropriate, given the extreme decoration of the sleeves.  I think the raw edges of the ruffle should have been concealed by the lining of the garment.

Interesting take on kimono design; however color & fabric choice, puffy complicated sleeves, and the ruffle on the hem gave the design more of a traditional Cuban or South American flavor, which although unexpected, loses the idea that the design is to reflect a kimono. I can see the effort put into the design and construction though. Good try!

The best part of this design is how you created the obi and the bow in the back. I love the peak-a-boo color effect it has. The worst parts of the design are the wings, looks more like an Evil Kenevil costume. There are too many design elements going on here….. Too many ruffles and too much sleeve detail. This design needs some serious editing. Construction is lacking on that skirt ruffle.
