Designer Challenge Scores

Challenge One

Guest Judge - Lori Lyon

A few words from our Guest Judge - I'd like to congratulate all of you for finishing your first challenge.  I know it isn't easy putting your work out there for others to judge.  Please learn from your scores and comments-with each challenge you will push yourself that much further  This is really a great opportunity to grow.  The other thing I would like the designers to consider- and I don't know if any of the other judges felt this way- I was bored by the use of black and red and corsets.  I do hope they can foresee in the future what others might use and stray away from the 'common'.  Anyone who wants to win this needs to stand out as doing something different.

A General Comment for all Designers from Tom Courtney: Lots of creativity in this challenge, but it seems some designers missed the point of the challenge: to be inspired by a pair of shoes and create a design based on that shoe.  In project Runway, it’s always interesting to see how the judges critique each entry…it is usually reinforced that Project Runway is a ‘design’ competition, and not a ‘sewing’ competition; so, the judges may overlook a construction issue in favor of a design element – however, in this competition, construction can be weighed similarly as design. With that being said, I tried to look at each design in a non-personal, objective way…you must not take my comments personally (otherwise, you shouldn’t be in a competition).  Finally, going forward, I highly suggest that designers seriously review their choice of dolls as models – some dolls pose much better than others…and it is to the designer’s advantage to showcase his/her design in the best possible way – if the doll cannot be posed properly – your design suffers from the perception of a fit or construction issue – and please bear in mind that ‘over-posing’ a doll also has the same effect.

Dramatic and vampish design using  cohesive trims very effectively. Gothic but feminine. Perhaps a flared wide red cuff on a tight  sleeve would have given a more tailored sleeve in keeping with the rest of the design but a great outfit none the less. Love the top hat and boots.

I really like the shoes and the top hat, and the zipper detailing on the dress.  This style of dress is very typical of what you would find in any good costume shop as a witches costume for Halloween. From the pictures I question the fit of the dress, it appears to be a bit loose, and saved by the belt in the waist.  I would like to see you push your limits in upcoming challenges and be more creative and adventurous with your designs. While I think your fashion is well made, I would like to see what you can do in a smaller scale than a 22inch doll.  Good first challenge, now step up your game and push your comfort zone.

I love the choice of boots…there are elements of goth used to create a new look.  The hat is a very clever touch! Be careful with loose-fitting silhouettes as they look like they might be poorly fitted. The flair at the bottom of the skirt is somewhat lost, and may have done better with a fitted line at the hip.

These shoes are awesome!  The design is well constructed and works well with the theme. The hat in red is a little distracting for me, I would have liked to see it in black with red accents instead.  Overall nice design.

I found your fashion to be a mix of “Cyber Goth” with the hair fall, mask, and accents of studded rings to the accessories, and “Goth Lolita” with the silhouette of the skirt.  I kind of got the feel of the post apocalyptic approach, but for me it needed more grit.  Overall your vision and approach was good, and I could easily see this character in “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” or possibly a “Star Wars” desert colony.  Your construction skills are good, I appreciate the treatment of the fabrics to achieve the desired look, I have used fire to fabric many times, and I am glad you are willing to push your techniques.  I like that you are working outside the box, and I expect great things from you in this contest! Good first challenge, keep pushing your limits.

For someone who felt “tapped out” for new inspiration, you definitely pulled it off.  This is dead on and fabulous.  The story is interesting and one can see your vision.  The colors and choices of fabric are not in the least boring.  Kudos to a design well done.

First off, I think your model is Natalia and not Kyori, but that doesn’t matter, maybe she changed her name. J  I like the overall direction and color scheme of your fashion.  I am not a fan of the drop waist with the Lolita skirt look.  I think your fashion would have been more effective if it had a true waist and the skirt was a bit shorter. The back of the dress looks as if the waist is falling lower than the front, but it might just be the picture.  I would have liked to have seen a better fit in the bodice and waist, especially from the side view.  I like where you are headed, and hope you push yourself to go further.  Good start.

I’m not fully understanding the relevance to the boots; but they work well together.  I like where this was going and love the bodice; but, I feel the skirt is too full and may be better suited with a tighter silhouette at the hip – the full skirt takes the Lolita look a bit toward the literal, which is not original.

Although the design is constructed well, I found it too simple in silhouette and predictable for the gothic Lolita look.  The hat doesn’t seem to mix well with the design. The ornamentation on the boots is nice though.

I really adore this fashion, the silhouette is beautiful, and the detailing is superb.  I really appreciate the influence of Alexander McQueen in the floral application.  The top stitch detail adds a very luxurious feel to the gown.  The shoes don’t feel “Goth” to me, I think had they been skyscraper platforms they would have been perfection with this gown.  I only have one issue with fit and that is at the front center point of where your corset top meets the skirt and causes the skirt to pooch, it may have been in the pose of the doll, but in the photo I couldn’t tell if it was the pose or the fit.   I have great expectations for you, and can’t wait to see what you deliver on the other challenges!  Fantastic start!

OK…this one was really difficult because of the relevance of the shoes to the design.  The dress is gorgeous and absolutely well-constructed – breathtaking, really.  But in terms of the challenge, it’s hard to fathom the designer was inspired to create this masterpiece based on the shoe.  What I see is a designer that wants to place their ideas ahead of the challenge…and that cost points in creativity and interpretation.

I have to say your corset construction is spot on! Nice design, colors are beautiful and really give the Victorian/romantic gothic feel. Shoes are a little simple and don’t really feel goth to me  but they still work.

Terrific little goth cocktail outfit. The corset ties have a spider web effect that works well with the outfit. My only reservation is with the length of the skirt. At some angles it looks as if the back should be the same length as the front.

While the shoes were not overtly “Goth” to me, I think you made them work to your advantage. The accessories are nice, I like the hat, and I like that you made a ring.  There is something about the silhouette of the dress that bothers me, I think the vest with the large ruffle trim makes the dolls shoulders look very narrow, and the lacing and wide skirt make her hips look wide. I like the ruffle trim on the skirt, I think I may have added a puff sleeve to the vest to widen the shoulder to balance the skirt.  One other thing that bothers me is the use of the lacing at the waist and hip area of the dress. I feel that lacing should give the illusion of a smaller waist of being girdled. Your lacing makes her look as if her hips are extremely wide, not a flattering look for most women, or dolls.  One trick to use when you want to use lacing on a doll with wide hips is to make a false front with flaps that you then can lace to give the illusion of a tiny waist. I want you to push yourself out of your comfort zone, I am looking forward to seeing more.

A very pretty dress that is very well made; but this wasn’t a ‘pretty dress’ challenge.  Take away the gold cross and it’s a lovely cocktail dress for a Parisian evening.  The gold lacing is distracting from the elegance of the dress.

I like the details, the added texture to the fabric with the lace overlay on the black silk was nice. I don’t mind the faux bustle, but it comes across more as just added bulk than an intentional design element.  From your description, I expected two garments, a red under dress and then the corseted black over dress.  I also notice that there is no lining, which would be a concern to buyers, especially with the colors you used, as red and black are well known to stain dolls.  My big concern is that the back of your dress does not close at the top.  I would like to see you concentrate on fit, and construction, and to push yourself out of your comfort zone.  I can see from your fashion and your photo’s that you have a fun view to share, I want to see you do more.

I’m not getting the relevance to the boots. The bodice idea is clean and well-done…but the overlay on the skirt is over-played.  Perhaps simple panniers instead of the all-out bustle would help the silhouette – the current skirt length and shape are out of proportion to the clean and architectural bodice.

For me this entry was more costume than fashion.  My first impression was a renaissance fair costume, and I never got past that, even when I tried to envision this on a runway, I couldn’t. I don’t see much in the world of fashion or haute couture in this design.  My interpretation of the challenge was to make a “Goth” influenced fashion inspired by a “Goth” pair of shoes. All I see is costume.  The construction is well executed, the fit is nice. It is a beautiful costume.  I think adding the “blood drops” to the corset and boots was overkill and not needed, they looked out of place. While the costume you made fits perfectly with the character and storyline of the doll, I don’t feel that it met the challenge. Remember this is a couture design competition and reign in the costuming desires.  From your work, I can see that you have the skills to compete in this contest, I hope you really bring it for the next challenge. My best advice is to make fashion not costume.  This time I think you missed the boat.

Lose the wings, now…immediately – they do not contribute to the design and are highly distracting – I would not want to sit next to her at dinner.  I love the tie-in to the boots…it doesn’t really showcase the boots, but love the thought and attention that went into the elements of the design and accessories to make a very interpretative look.  Going forward, keep the research, but consider editing…there are too many elements in the bodice, and the lacing is lost.

Design is interesting, although a little costumed.  The wings are fabulous, but I am not sure they were necessary to this design.  Construction is well done. Again this entry was another costume.  For me this felt like a biker chic Halloween witch.  I can tell you put effort and work into your entry, I appreciate the details and fun.  But this is a “Couture Doll Design Contest”.  I don’t see any couture in this entry.  I question the taste level of your doll, it looks like she prefers to shop at the house of Harley Davidson over any of the couture design houses.  I don’t love the finishing details on the clothing, they don’t showcase your skills.  The shoes rock, you did a great job making them!  I don’t want to discourage you, I want to challenge you to step up your game and bring it for the next challenge!  I think you are capable of much more than you have shown us.

Very interesting concept…and love that denim was used.  Lose the wings…they contribute nothing to this, and really do not work with the denim ‘feel’ at all.  I see inspiration from the shoes…but that being said, the outfit tends to outshine the shoes. The unfinished edges of the denim work with the design, but also tells me there was not a great deal of construction difficulty on this. Also…and please take this in a constructive way: please be cautious about too much thought in your story – this is a design competition, not a writing competition; though I do appreciate the enthusiasm you put into it.

I really like your design and your approach to the challenge.  The shoes you started with are fantastic. I like that you took the idea of a wedding gown and made it runway edgy.  I like the short front ruched skirt, and all the ruching treatment in the back skirt.  I feel that the crocheted black lace in the veil is too heavy, a more delicate black lace would have better conveyed her fragility. I really like the idea of such a deadly creature as a vampire being so fragile. I know the bulk is an issue, but I would have liked to see you trim the bodice.  I also would like to see you rely less on prefabricated trims, while the end effect was nice, it can get to be too easy to rely on said trims, and can stifle your creativity.  One of my rules for my own work before using a prefabricated trim, I always ask myself, “Can I do this any other way, with as good or better result?”.  If the answer is no, then use the trim, but don’t automatically go to the trims.  Also watch the weight and scale of your trims, to heavy or large can give the feel of “granny’s parlor” to any fashion. Good start, I hope to see you push yourself the rest of the challenges.

I’m having a hard time seeing how the shoes inspired this…it seems as if the designers already had an inspiration from the story and used the shoes to accessorize it.  Simply put, there is far too much happening with this; also, goth brides are not very original.  The draping in the back is too bulky and may have be better realized in a chiffon and other light material.  When employing draping in a train, there needs to be a fluidity to the lines and shapes comprising the drape – it’s not easy to achieve; but I think you did an admirable example.

Very unusual concept that works really well. Love the use of feathers and the mix and match way of employing them. They add texture and depth to the design. I do think the hat could have been more structured to fit back with the skirt & corset and not so soft. I also think perhaps the bra cups could have had a black satin lining to follow the panty.

I like this fashion a great deal.  The shoes that inspired the fashion are perfect to compliment the gown you created.  I love the architectural element you brought to the gown, it was perfectly balanced with the delicate tulle panels. It takes a confident and secure woman (doll) to wear this.  I also like that the feather skirt can be removed and worn as a cape.  Feathers used in doll fashion are one of my pet peeves, if the scale is too large, your use works wonderfully. I am glad that you used a scale of feather that works with the doll.  Any larger and it would not have worked.  I can also see her wearing this dress, without the feather skirt or cape to a cocktail party and being both the scandal and hit of the party. Your choice of laced closure for the gown was perfect, the added glamour and softness of the satin ribbon is brilliant. Your use of accessories work well, I adore the necklace. You pulled off the “Goth” without going into the costume department.  I also appreciate your styling of the doll, the hair you chose, and the overall pose and feel of your photographs.  Fantastic work!

I loved this; but surprisingly enough, it’s the panty I find distracting…I would rather have seen a nude lining.  I’ve never been of the school that any woman or doll would want to show her panties in public, particularly when wearing a design achievement such as this. Be careful with your posing – the side view implies that it is not well fitted; but you can see in the other images that the fit is spot on.

I like that you made the boots, they are nice.  The dress is not a new style or design. The overall look is ok, if a bit boring.  I would like to see some color added, “Goth” doesn’t have to be all black. I know you said you couldn’t line the bodice because of the eyelets, but I have used eyelets on latex that I lined, you can always use tulle or organza as a lining that doesn’t add bulk. I did notice as well that the skirt was not lined.  I do like the fit that you achieved with your bodice. And your use of eyelets is great, they appear to be set perfectly. I like the relevance to the boot, but this look isn’t inspired overall.  It’s definitely a goth look, but it’s somewhat predictable in terms of fitted shiny black bodice and asymmetrical black skirt. I admire the simplicity of it, but it needs more oomph to make it original and creative.

A lot of thought behind this design. Not sure about the hat. It seems to just perch on top of the wig and detracts from the balance of the outfit. The wig works by itself. Without the hat the flowers don't work at the back either. They are unnecessary to the design. Love the corset. It should dominate.

I am confused when I look at this fashion.  The sleeves just don’t feel as if they go with the short skirt, the silhouette from the front is confused.  The rear silhouette is much better, the sleeves make sense with the long flow of the back train.  But the train doesn’t make sense with the mid-length skirt from the front view.  The actual skirt is such an odd length for the fashion, either a short Lolita style skirt or a long floor length skirt would have worked so much better for me.  I like the corset, and the hat is a nice touch.  I think the dress may have worked better if you lost the sleeves and train or used a different length skirt.  Anyway, the construction is good, as is the fit.  For me it looks like to competing design ideas collided and you couldn’t decide what to use.  I need to see more from you before I can figure you out.

I like the color palate deviation from just black; the concept of the skirt and bodice work well, but the bodice is not well fitted and the corset is bulky.  Lose the wings, they add nothing to this design – but they may have worked well as a peasant-style sleeve.  Also, the detail on the back skirt is not needed when you already have an interesting skirt.

The shoes are not “Goth” by any stretch of the imagination.  I like the silhouette of your gown. I feel that the contrasting top stitching is a distraction and not needed.  I do appreciate the little pops of red, but I think the swag of red fabric across the bodice could have been bolder.  I like the ruffles under the skirt, they add a layer of needed interest.  I don’t think your gown is overly “Goth”, but I can see the inspirations. The jewelry is a nice compliment, but again I think the necklace could have been bolder.  I think that is my advice to you overall, go bold!  Get outside your comfort zone. This outfit is really well-made and lovely from a couture point-of-view; but nothing says goth to me.  If this is what the designer created based on those shoes, then I think it’s another example of a designer that wanted to do what he/she wanted to do rather than adhere to the challenge’s guidelines.

I don’t see anything “Goth” in the shoes, as I don’t think a color scheme alone sets a style.  The overall style you were going for is ok, but a bit boring.  The fit on your bodice is not great, the large overlapping flaps of the back need work. Also the bodice is not lined nor finished around the edges, just raw vinyl.  I do like the skirt and think it shows promise.  The belt is ok, but I don’t understand the need for the extremely long strands of red hanging from the back of the belt. The chain belt is getting lost around the waist with large silver belt. I don’t understand how the disc on her head ties in with the rest of the fashion and the hairstyle escapes me?  I think you show promise in the contest, but I would suggest you focus on finishes, fit, and styling.  Push your limits.

Your description was not really helpful, I don’t really care if the doll likes anyone.  What I need to know is your inspiration for the fashion, materials used, or something that helps explain what you enter in the challenge.  I like the boots, although by themselves they are not very “Goth”. I do like the tulle hooded cape, the rest of the fashion falls flat. It appears to be poor fitting from the photos, I guess it could be the bulk of the fabrics used, but it doesn’t do anything to flatter the dolls figure.  The finishing and construction are ok, but overall it is a very boring fashion.  I encourage you to work on fit, and think of the weight of the fabrics you use, and to be bolder in your design choices.  It is fine to include the doll’s thoughts in your description, but please also include your own thoughts as well.  This entry leaves me with the image of one of those loner teen girls you see hanging out at the mall, desperately trying too hard to be an outcast, and failing at being “Goth” or edgy. All that is missing is her journal and her “Hot Topic” shopping bag. I believe you can do more.

Please do not take this personally, but the outfit is boring.  Goth is many things, but it’s not boring…the simplicity of the design doesn’t successfully pull inspiration from the boots.  The tulle and lace legs treatments don’t work with the gauntlets and seem like more of an afterthought to accessorize the simplistic look of the outfit.

I love the shoes, they are so “Goth” and very Lolita.  The rocking horse platforms are very in fashion right now in Japan. Your take on “Goth Lolita” is really well executed. I like the color scheme and the use of fabrics, and trims. The accessories are brilliant for the style, the large bow is perfect, and the coffin purse is very well executed!  My one mild criticism would be I would have liked the skirt just a tad bit shorter and fuller.  Yuri makes the perfect model.  The fit is nice, I can see that you put a lot of thought and effort into the design and details. And your finishing is wonderful.  Very well done!  I look forward to seeing more of your entries!

Again on the Lolita skirt…it’s too full and creates the same ‘Lolita’ look that has already been seen; therefore, not so original.  But that’s the only thing I found on this to be distracting.

Very cute Gothic Lolita look.  Love the accessories chosen,  the coffin bag is really cute.  Overall design works well.

Great detail and texture in the skirt but the outfit is let down by the lack of detail in the top half of the outfit. Perhaps some punchwork or appliqué in the leather might have added some detail and texture & broken up the solid effect of the corset and gauntlets. Love the cute knickers and stockings.

The boots were a good starting point.  I like the direction you were going with the fashion.  I like that you derived your influences from so many different details.  I love the back of your skirt, the way if falls and the use of the ruffles.  The front of the skirt doesn’t seem to match the back as well to my eye.  I am also not crazy about the fit of your corset, I would have liked it better if it ended at the true waist, as the fit below the waist was not fantastic, and it didn’t lay well with the weight of the material.  I also think a lace would have been a better choice for the fingerless gloves. Overall it was not boring, and didn’t come across as a costume, so nice job. I would like to see you work on your finishing and fit.  Keep looking for inspiration and thinking outside the box. I like that you recycled everything for the challenge.

I did like how the shoes tied in with the design; but I can’t see them in the final look. Not very original, but the combination of texture is interesting.  The fit on the bodice is distracting; but I did like the direction the skirt was taking.

Concept of recycling is interesting- you did a nice job with the overall look. Construction could be worked on, proportion of the skirt seems a little off to me.  Maybe three layered ruffles  would have added more visual interest.

So many tiny details in this beautifully fabricated design. I'm sure the full effect can only be appreciated by seeing the actual garment. The textures created are exquisite and adore the boots! Simplicity of design works so well here.

I love the shoes, you did a fantastic job making those!  Also the bodice is really beautiful.  I would have liked to have been able to see more detail of the skirt, but from the pictures, it is beautiful.  Your finishing on the corset is divine. The fit is very nice.  The entire ensemble looks well thought out, and perfectly executed.  The styling of the doll fits the fashion well.  Everything was well executed and thoughtful, I hope you continue to deliver a fashion forward edge to all your entries. Well done!

Very well-done…but I can’t tell which came first, the corset or the boots?  Remember the theme of the challenge: the designer doesn’t say anything about how the boots inspired the look.  Other than that, the bodice is a bit bulky, but it does contribute well to a the silhouette through a good fit.  And just a comment: the draping and fabric are lovely, but I don’t really care if it nearly killed you – this is a design competition, not Survivor.

Beautiful design, interesting use of fabrics and embellishments. I can see a lot of thought went into this design, it is nicely executed, although the use of red and black is predictable.

Very architecturally inspired & refreshingly different. Clever tailoring to suit the inspiration. My only problem is with the black velvet bow. It is too big and badly constructed, detracting from a fabulous outfit. Love the shoes!

The shoes are really great, they remind me of some of Alexander McQueen’s shoes.  I am not crazy about the pearl buckle on the shoes though, without that they would be perfect. I am glad that you see that “Goth” doesn’t have to be black!  Your sewing skills are apparent, that jacket has more pieces than a jigsaw puzzle!  I can see your inspiration of the cathedrals in the jacket, but with the large sleeves to the jacket, and the peplum, it gives the entire fashion a very 80’s Dynasty feel.  It is sooooooo dated….  I love the work, thought, effort, and skill that you put into the fashion.  My only criticism would be to be modern, more forward thinking with your styling. Push yourself to be more edgy, more fashion forward, you have the skill set to go far in the contest!  Step it up and bring it for the next challenge!

Practically perfect in every way. The shoes are painfully fabulous.  Love the ‘white’ twist…and the elements of design on a small scale – extraordinary!  A very highly original take on ‘gothic’ – and it works.

Nicely executed, construction is very good. Great details on the jacket.  Shoes are great-but I’m not crazy about them with this outfit.  I like the use of white instead of black- it gives a fresh outlook to the goth theme.  I am struggling with the silhouette though- the short corset dress doesn’t seem to work for me.

Cute outfit that could cover quite a few different themes so needed to be more defined to just gothic. The chains on the corset work well but she's verging more into punk than gothic. Like the pleated skirt.

You said you don’t think you had any inspiration for the challenge and I can see why.  The boots were not a good starting point for you.  Those boots are more barn dance ho-down than “Goth”.  With that said you didn’t do terrible, you made a fashion, not a costume. The corset and mini skirt could be “Goth”, but you were stuck with those boots, so you had to use the color somewhere else to tie them in.  The gingham fabric that tied in the boots added to the barn dance feel of the fashion.  Your details and styling helped with the “Goth” theme, but overall you missed the mark. She was so much the country girl playing “Goth” at the barn dance, the pig tails added to the feel.  But at least you tried and you finished your entry!  The fit of the bodice is not fantastic, but is ok.  I would suggest working on finishing and fit, and work to find your inspiration for the next challenges.  Work outside your comfort zone and you might surprise yourself!

I love the designer’s color choices and relevance to the boots. The finish on the back is very distracting; but overall, this is very successful.  I think that the designer should be cautioned about revealing that goth is so far away from what you normally do.  This is a competition – and you should expect your creative strings to be pulled in every direction – which is what the judges will be looking for…find the inspiration, don’t tell us that you don’t know if you were inspired or not – this comment automatically skewed the whole presentation for me.

The back of this outfit looks great and if the skirt fabric was used at the front and in the bodice I think the outfit would have been much more cohesive. I love the colors, very romantic gothic, and it's terrific to see a print. Black stockings would have added to the effect too. Love the wig.

I loved the boots when I saw the picture of them.  When I clicked through to the fashion, I felt like the boots got lost.  I like the brocade fabric used for most of the skirt, and would have much preferred the entire skirt to be made of that same fabric.  I don’t understand the use of the mint green fabric, it is not needed, and interrupts the feel of the skirt.  I don’t really understand your color choices at all, they seem sporadic and not well planned.  The mint green distracts the eye, and almost looks like an apron over the front of the skirt. The use of the short black overskirt also escapes me.  I feel that the fashion would have been better if the skirt was all the same brocade fabric, (no green) and if the short black skirt had been made into a wide belt or small corset, then it would have tied together and felt more cohesive.  I’m not a big fan of the wig used either, it doesn’t feel “Goth” to me, it just looks a hot mess.  Nothing about the fashion feels “Goth” to me. I would have like to have seen your pieces lined and a cleaner finish.  I think you have the skills to compete in the contest, I think your big challenge is going to edit your ideas into one cohesive design and focus your attention.  I just felt lost with your fashion.  Focus, step it up, and give us something spectacular!  You can do it!

The front of the dress is very different from the back, and not in a complimentary way.  The back is really lovely.  The texture of the peplum and the sleeves is not congruent with each other…in fact, the peplum is not doing the design any favors at all. Be careful with trying to ‘pick up’ colors in a coordinating fabric – the pink and mint didn’t work for the ‘goth’ theme – and the construction on the bodice was distracting.

This overall design has potential, but the fabrics chosen seem to work against it. The peplum cuts the design in half and isn’t necessary for the overall look.  The printed panne velvet is beautiful and would have worked better with different accent fabrics.

I like that you have the spirit to step up and use a guy!  Bravo for that!  I also love the boots you started with. Your inspiration and influences are very well carried out in your design.  I like the fashion, it is very fashion forward, and nails “Goth” inspiration perfectly. The fit is nice, and the look is overall very runway!  I saw where you said you didn’t line the pants to reduce bulk, once again I will repeat that you can line vinyl, leather, or latex with organza or a similar weight fabric (such as you used for the shirt) and not add bulk. With that said, I don’t mind that the pants aren’t lined, but they could be, is the point.  One tip, your photos would not have been so harsh in contrast if you had used a different color of back ground than white.  White background with black focal point will create a harsh contrast, if you had used a pale grey, charcoal color, or some other light color you would have gotten better contrast in your photos.  Overall a great job, well done!  I am excited to see more from you!

The inspiration was very well thought through, and despite execution issues, the overall feel of this design was fun and very relevant to the theme.  Might I suggest something less shiny (gives a very Matrix-y) look…a combo of matte and shiny would have made me scream (in a good way).

I love these shoes, red skyscraper platforms are perfect for a “Goth” inspired fashion.  A bit of warning, your first photo, the front photo the doll is not standing, she is seated. I can’t see the fit of the front of the gown in this photo. I won’t give benefit of the doubt again. The fit appears to be good from the back, I can tell it was a design choice to have the open back above the closure. I do like the multilayer skirt.  The hat with lace veil is a nice touch. It was very hard to see any detail of your fashion with such dark pictures against a dark background.  I noticed that Larraine had to Photoshop out props in one photo, and props can still be seen in the second photo showing the back of the gown. You need to provide us full front standing, full back standing, and full side standing photos of your fashion on the doll without any props in the photos. Find a way to stand your girl up for pictures, it is not hard to do. From the work I could see I liked the fashion, I wish I could have seen it better. Please provide photographs that follow the rules on upcoming challenges, otherwise I will give scores of 0 for not following the rules.  Your photographs count as much as your sewing and design skills. It is hard to judge what you can’t see!

Great shoes…but I’m not getting the relevance to the design.  Also…I think the accessories make this more goth than the outfit does…which is a bit distracting.  I like the dress very much, despite some construction and design issues in the back (the ‘V’ back doesn’t look intentional – even if it was)…but I’m just not getting a strong goth feel.

I love these shoes, a great choice for this challenge.  The design is nice, and works well for the theme.  The added touches of the hat gives her the mysterious goth look.  The back of the gown is interesting, very nicely done.
