Challenge Two

The game I chose as my inspiration was Batman: Arkam Asylum.  The artwork and atmosphere appealed to me.  Arkam asylum is very decadent in its architecture but is also somewhat decayed, so that was my starting point decayed decadence.  The dress is made of a dark grey distressed eyelet sewn onto a sheer background, this I overlayed onto a silver metallic fabric.  The upper sleeves have a pleated detail and the lower part is a stretch black lace that comes to a point at the hand. The dress closes with a zipper and is lined in a white cotton/poly blend. The sleeves are lined in flesh colored stretch tulle. Her necklace is black faux leather studded with faceted black gems, black sequins, and dark irridescent beads, this was inspired by Batman's famous cowl, it is lined in stretch tulle and closes with hook and eye..  The  fascinator is a simple black cap covered in black lace, edged in black taffeta, and topped with gravity defying lace "wings".  The corset belt is faux leather lined in black taffeta with grommet closure. Model is FR16.

Challenge Three

The designers I chose were Christian Dior and Alexander McQueen.   To begin I took Dior's classic ballgown silhouette and combined it with the style line of McQueen's iconic "bumster" trouser where the skirt and bodice of the dress meet in the back.  McQueen was also known for being inspired by nature and using natural items in his designs.  I  took the sand on the beach and the foam from waves as my inspiration.  The gown is fitted through the body to just above the knee, but right under the waist is a three tier spray of embroidered tulle in colors of sand and pale green.  There is another spray of embroidered tulle coming out from under the gown around the legs, this layer is actually attached to the lining to give the illusion of a separate underskirt.  The body of the dress is made in a gold and red crossweave metallic fabric and embroidered on the front panel in the same art deco design as the tulle.  The seashell and and gold chain headpiece is cradled by the gentle wave of the models hair.  She wears a gold and seashell ring on her right hand.  Gown is lined in cotton battiste and closes with zipper and 1 hook and eye.  To see McQueen's iconic bumster trouser and skirt go to metmuseum.com and look at the Savage Beauty exhibit photos.

Challenge Four

I think most iconic gowns have a simple silhouette giving them a timeless appeal, so that's what I went for.  The gown is gold colored silk with layers of pale blue tulle.  The overskirt is gold silk embroidered in a matching gold colored thread with metallic silver highlights, accented with ruched tulle in a pale blue.  Overskist is attached with belt in matching silk.  Silk clutch is embellished with rhinestones in various finishes and a faux opal on the flap. All skirts are lined in tulle. Bodice of main dress is lined in white battiste, bodice of overskirt is lined in gold silk.  Model is Integrity toys FR16.

Challenge Five

For this challenge I was  really inspired by the Harajuku girls of Japan and the make up of Geisha's.  The main dress is a wrap style which closes just with fabric sashes being pulled through a seam and wrapped around waist, the top is made of a printed chiffon in two patterns the skirt is yellow twill with a bias trim of matching chiffon the body of the dress is lined in white cotton the sleeves are unlined to allow them to drape.  The over robe is a printed taffeta and is self lined, I wanted to interpret the fullness and volume in a kimono in a modern way so the over robe was my way of doing that.  The belt is pink leather with a tulle overlay, silver grommets and buckle.  I made two bracelets to compliment the look one square one round.  For the fascinator I sculpted a face inspired by Bunraku puppetry and painted it in the style of the Geisha.  It is attached to a small cap covered in yellow twill with a bias trim of the printed taffeta, wired ribbon provides the finishing touch.
